Odyssey Battery

Less weight in a car is the same thing as more horsepower so when my battery started to leak I looked into alternative choices. I found the Hawker Energy Odyssey PC925mjt battery to be the best. It will last longer than a normal battery, is dry cell so it won't leak, is smaller, is about 15 lb lighter (25 lb) and has 470 cca. The other popular battery by Hawker to put in an Rx-7 is the Odyssey PC680 but this battery only has 280 cca (despite what some say). I don't think this is enough unless you use your car only for racing. Another interesting fact is the reserve capacity. The 925 has almost double that of the 680.

The PC925 measures 7.05x6.69x5.04 inches. Because it is a dry cell it can be mounted in any direction except upside down. I mounted it as seen because it made it possible to reposition the little black fuse box. I bolted it directly to the battery by bending the positive metal lead. I also had to extend one of the wires out the back so it would reach. To hold the battery down I custom made the aluminum bracket you see. It has a lip on the back and is held down by three screws. One is stock, one is stock that was bent and the last uses a lock nut on the bottom and a wing nut on the top. I got this battery for about $150 back in August of 99. It still works to this day and was used daily for about 4 years but now sits for weeks at a time and starts the car easily. I'll be creating a custom battery tray for it soon. For more details on the battery or to find a dealer near you go to Hawker Energy's web site. Another good website is http://www.stealth316.com/2-dynabatt.htm. It outlines the clear advantages of Hawker's line of batteries.

Update: This battery finally died after 6 years of solid service. Unlike standard batteries it didn't just up and quit one day. Instead it slowly looses its ability to hold a charge. So instead of driving to the mall and then being unable to start your car after a day of being dragged around by your woman this battery fails to hold a charge overnight. This allows you to deal with the problem at your house where you may have a battery charger or jumpstarting device. I bought a new one for about $115 at www.batterymart.com. My only complaint is that the battery is red in color now, which doesn't mesh well with my blue and black color scheme.
